1. Education during the American Military Occupation

The United States, which governed South Korea militarily between the time of the country’s gaining independence and the establishment of the Republic of Korea in 1948, acquired the Bureau of Education of the Government-General of Joseon to enforce educational reconstruction in South Korea, and the U.S. Military Government was established in Jeju Island to implement this. At that time, by easily obtaining approval from the governor, it was possible to open a school in a local village office or empty hall, or in the warehouse of a municipal office or attached buildings. During this period, 42 elementary schools and 9 middle schools were opened in the jurisdiction of Jeju City. In this exhibition space, student desks and tools used by students and teaching staff at that time, and textbooks, award certificates, report cards and more are on display for you to experience the atmosphere of this period.
